Because this is a custom-built theme that isn’t hosted on the official Chrome Web Store, you will need to load it manually using Chrome’s Developer tools. It only takes a few seconds!
Phase 1: Prepare Your File
-
Locate the Download: Find the custom-chrome-theme.zip file you just downloaded (usually in your “Downloads” folder).
-
Extract the Folder: You must unzip the file before Chrome can read it.
-
Windows: Right-click the .zip file and select Extract All…, then click Extract.
-
Mac: Double-click the .zip file to automatically extract the folder.
Phase 2: Load the Theme into Chrome
-
Open Extensions: Open Google Chrome, type chrome://extensions/ into your URL bar, and hit Enter.
-
Enable Developer Mode: Look in the top-right corner of the Extensions page and toggle Developer mode to the ON position.
-
Load the Theme: A new menu bar will appear at the top left. Click the button that says Load unpacked.
-
Select Your Folder: A file browser window will pop up. Navigate to the folder you extracted in Phase 1, click to select the folder itself (do not open it to select the files inside), and click Select Folder.
Success! Your browser will instantly flash and apply your brand new custom theme. You can safely turn “Developer mode” back off if you wish.
How to Uninstall or Reset Your Theme If you want to remove the theme or try a new one, you can easily revert Chrome to its default state:
-
Open Chrome Settings by typing chrome://settings/appearance in the URL bar.
-
Under the Appearance section, look for the “Theme” row.
-
Click the Reset to default button.
